Fussells Balance Lock or Boat Lift on the Dorset & Somerset Canal

Open Day Saturday February 27th 2010

There will be a chance to look around the site of Fussells Trial Balance Lock near Mells on Saturday 27th Feb 2010 at either 10.30am or 2.00pm

Work began on clearing the site in October 2003 and the excavations took place two years later.

On view will be the remains of one of the world's first boat lifts and the artefacts recovered.

The visit will take the form of a guided tour with explanations of the Dorset & Somerset Canal and the workings of the boat lift.

These spectacular remains are on private land and not accessible to the public.

If you are a canal enthusiast, historian or industrial archaeologist you will find this event well worthwhile.
